Bruuuuuuuuuuuuuuce!

Readers of this blog may have picked up a sense that I'm only a half-hearted fan of Bruce Springsteen.  Not true. I think he's really good.  I just don't think he's the greatest, as so many others do, so it may seem like I damn him with faint praise.

But it is his birthday today, so let's celebrate all that is Bruce.

I wish to reflect for the record that Bruce's current drummer (or one of them) was my drummer first. Joffo Simmons sat in front of me in 9th grade health class (he brought in Howard the Duck comics which we read while the gym teacher tried to teach us about sex). Later during senior year, I had the crazy idea to start a band- he knew how (or was learning) to drum and I knew how to shout into a microphone while pogoing. (our band played three official dates, our last one in May 1980 when we rocked the hell out of the Garden Club and got shut down by the cops-OK- one cop.) Anyway I hope Mr. Springsteen appreciates the training I undertook on his behalf.

I do a mean Thunder Road in the shower, I might add. The cat seems to like it.

I've always wondered about drummers in rock bands. Rock and roll would seem to be a young man's game, except we see plenty of old men still doing it. Nevertheless, drumming requires speed, strength and a good grip--doesn't it get tough to pull off those long Springsteen concerts when you hit your fifties?
