Tomorrow I will post an appreciation of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers. Still, it's better to see them than read about them. So, if you get TCM, watch it today, as they're playing a whole bunch of their films.

What's your favorite film? Mine is Swing Time.
Their biggest hit by far was Top Hat, and for decades it was acclaimed their greatest. In the last few decades, more and more are saying Swing Time is their masterpiece. I can understand why. Song for song it can stand up to Top Hat, and dance-wise it has three major duets and a dazzling solo. Also, and I think the was decisive for many critics, Swing Time was directed by a major director, George Stevens.
Still, I prefer Top Hat. They're at the top of their game but the series is still fresh. The score (every song was a hit) may have been equaled but never surpassed. And the film is sheer delight all the way through its fourth song, "Cheek To Cheek." The story zings along and each number is perfectly integrated. Only after then do we lose some of the fizz as the farcical complications have to be cleared up, and the final number, "The Piccolino," though it has a clever lyric, is yet another attempt to have a big dance number at the end, a la "Carioca" and "Continental."
Swing Time, on the other hand, takes a while to get going (since the first dance was cut) and has both an overly cutesy love plot and a weak overall plot full of tiresome contrivance. When it's not singing or dancing, it's pretty hard to watch. Furthermore, I prefer the supporting cast in Top Hat (though they do an even better job in The Gay Divorcee).
