That's Entertainment

The sixth season of TV's most popular show, Amercan Idol, just premiered. A lot of people love watching all the bad singers in the first round of auditions getting gonged, but it's my least favorite part of the show.

Sure, they have to learn sooner or later, but it's tough to watch people's dreams being crushed on prime time TV.

I'm looking forward to when the semi-finalists get to Hollywood. There's still plenty of heartbreak, but at least the contestants aren't completely deluded.

American Idol is a pernicious influence on pop music. Not because it tramples peoples hopes (hell, nearly all TV sports do that) but it seems to promote mind-numbingly dull pop music. Nothing new or innovative will ever come from this dreck. American Idol will find the next Andy Gibb not the next Elvis (either Presley or Costello)

That's the irony of the show. I enjoy watching it, but I wouldn't consider buying an album from the artists it produces.

And yet, many have become real stars.

The best rock music isn't about fitting into any particlar mold, so AI isn't about that. While the show has gotten a little more diverse, having rockers and country people winning, its ideal is still someone like Celine Dion.

Two things: AI is first and foremost TV. It's meant to be good television and the musical careers it launches are almost -- almost -- beside the point.

Second, if you follow Simon, he always champions the singers who are little quirky, rough-edged and different. And the winners, in relation to the other contestants, tend to be the least drecky. An example would be the hard-edged Fantasia who won out over the smooth, overly vocal-coached Diane diGarmo. No it's not musically innovative but I can't agree that it's more Andy Gibb than Elvis. Otherwise our reigning Idol would be Ace.

Ah, but Simon didn't want Taylor Hicks to go to Hollywood, Paula and Randy sent him there.
