"You couldn’t have a starker contrast between the multiple layers of checks and balances [at ‘60 Minutes’] and a guy sitting in his living room in his pajamas writing.”
The little pamphlet Bobby Fischer Teaches Chess is perhaps the best how-to book I have read. Bobby teaches a whole philosophy of the game as well as many basics and subtleties in a few pages. At the end, one is no GM but certainly can play and understand the game well. The philosophy is aggressive: from the first move think how can I check mate the opponent.

AAGuy
Best game to illustrate AAGuy's last point, and a personal favorite, is well analyzed here.
