Preemptive "Racism"

People are already starting to talk like it's over, Obama's got the nomination sewn up. Maybe they're right. So it's time to start a preemptive racism baiting watch. What I mean is people claiming if Obama has any trouble in his path to the presidency, and if anyone has the nerve to vote against him, it must be due to racism.

I've seen several pundits make this sort of statement already. Heck, we've even had it at Pajama Guy. Look at the fifth comment to this post.

I will repeat ad nauseum if necessary race is not an issue but that the old guard and boomer generation on both the right and left will bring up race because thats they way they think and that was the prevailing issue in their formative years. While racism and the reaction to it is an issue, the bigger issue for Obama is being called a muslim- check out any of the comments pages on the WSJ blogs (subscription required, sorry) or Slate, or yahoo/MSNBC and you get the Obama=Osama rants (with alot of other rants too). I don't see any racist jibes- either because thats more unacceptable these days or the blog managers are quicker to notice and pull them- I don't know.

Pointing out his middle name is Hussein may not prove much. On the other hand, is it any better that we have a far left candidate who's being treated by the rest of the media as a centrist?
