While watching Family Guy with the CC on, I noticed when one of the characters said "rein in," it was spelled "reign in." I'm used to seeing the "rein/reign" mix-up informally, but really, shouldn't a professional closed captioner working for a network get this right?

Wouldn't you expect them to type in the shortest possible version?
Yes, this time they went out of their way to get it wrong.
What I expect is for them to spell the words correctly. I wouldn't want to see them type "2 bad 4 U" or employ emoticons.
We are a post-literate society. The number of people who watch Family Guy in CC who would notice the mistake is statistically insignificant.
I recall reading somewhere that closed-captioners are independent contractors who take the work in hour-long-blocks, and it doesn't pay a heck of a lot. Not a system likely to lead to long-term, committed professionalism. The solution? Same as in document review for major litigations -- a combination of technology (speech recognition) and outsourcing to somewhere like the Philippines.
Generally, closed captioning is full of misteaks.
