No Joking

Much to my surprise, the Detroit Tigers are now above .500. Despite all their problems, I now believe they've got a shot. And with the Twins and the White Sox on a tear, the AL Central Division is no longer a joke.

No, here's the joke--the NL Western Division, where the Dodgers reside. You can't expect to win any more no-hitters, guys. I just want to know if anyone's ever won a division finishing below .500.

No. The Padres won the NL West in 2005 with an 82-80 record, and the Mets won in 1973 with an 82-79 record, but nobody has pulled it off with a losing record. It almost certainly would have happened in 1994, when the Rangers led their division while 10 games under .500 in August, but the strike "saved" us from that indignity.

It would be great testament to the management skills of Bud Selig if a division champion was below .500. We could add it to the 1994 strike, the blind eye to steroids and the cutting and running afterwards. I 'd like to blame him for the variant of baseball played in the AL if I could but I think that was other idiots

You could have at least tipped a hat of thanks to the CO Rockies who managed to gt swept by the Tigers as part of their current 7 game losing streak. Last night's indignity was losing to the 8 consecutive game losing Padres here in Denver, despite having led 8 - 3 going into the 6th.

I did have fun sweeping AZ and Philly in the playoffs last year, not so much fun being swept by the Red Sox, but whatever good-will the Rockies earned last year is quickly being lost during this fiasco of a season.
