Metaphor Alert

They apparently have fixed this by now but I was drawn to a headline from the on-line Boston Globe this morning, "Now Red Sox Fans Can Prove Their Undying Loyalty" about a new $5000 casket festooned with Red Sox insignia and markings. I'm not so concerned about the substance of the article- I suppose there are sillier ways one can choose to box up one's mortal remains, but the unwitting incoherence of the headline bothered me.

Being buried in a decorated coffin of course has nothing to do with "undying" unless the thing has the power to re-animate corpses as mindless zombies rooting on the Olde Towne Team. Brings a new meaning to "Fenway Faithful."

LAGuy adds: Speaking of odd figures of speech, not to mention re-animation, a lot of reviews of No End In Sight used a particular phrase (presumably quoting from some original source): that Bush had "galvanized a violent quagmire." It's makes me laugh just to type it.
