Cable Bridge To 2009
Apparently Time Warner Cable hasn't been able to renegotiate its deal with Viacom, so starting right now, millions (including me) will lose 19 channels, including Nickelodeon, Comedy Central and MTV.
No matter how it turns out, I still feel like there must be a better way to receive cable. I still want to know why I can't pick and choose what I want a la carte?

The short answer is that no one's figured how to make (more) money by offering programming a la carte rather than through packages. And as long as certain channels you don't watch - like the Home Shopping Network - pay for those you do watch, that's not likely to change.
It will be interesting to see how the cable and satellite providers handle the digital transition next month with all the opportunities for new channels that it presents.
