Surly
All my life I've pronounced "syrup" with an "i' as in "sit"--"si-rup." Lately, though, I've noticed a lot of people pronounce it with a "u" sound (or an "i" as in "sir")--"su-rup." (Some go so far as to make it one syllable--"surp.")
Apparently, both pronunciations are acceptable. In fact, the latter seems to be preferred. Sorry, not only will I keep pronouncing it my way--I don't even like to hear it any other.

So it's just a New York thing to call it see-rup, then?
I thought it was seer-up in Western PA (a slight variation of Queens Guy's pronunciation)
