No Problem

So Nancy Pelosi makes astonishing claims about the CIA, and when asked about them, replies: "I have made the statement that I'm going to make on this. I don't have anything more to say about it. I stand by my comment."

That's great. Accuse an agency, without any evidence, of a serious crime, and when it looks like you've been found out, rather than explain further, or apologize, just say that's it, story's over.

She'll get away with it, of course. The Democrats are in charge and they want this to go away. It's also probably a bad strategy for the Republicans to go after Pelosi, since this makes it all about her, and makes them look like bullies who should be doing other things.

I was with you right up to the "without any evidence" line. I believe it's the case that congress members are not permitted to take notes or have corroborating witnesses to these briefings. And at least one other (was it Martinez from Florida?) said that the CIA had claimed he was briefed four times, but his notes showed he hadn't even met with them on three of those days. The CIA later agreed he had been correct. I'm not sure how to prove who's right here, but expecting her to have evidence is certainly an unfair way to look at it.

Here we go again. This isn't the Bourne Identity, this is real life. The CIA regularly briefs the top people in government about what's going on, and at the time had no reason to hide what they were doing or lie about it--in fact, had every reason to make sure everyone was on board.(To this day what they did is popular with the public. Then it was a matter of getting in trouble if they didn't do enough.)

And as for lying, we have actual statements from others in the past that contradict what Pelosi is saying--including Pelosi's. You know, politicians have been known to lie for self-serving reasons, too.

The Cia is probably of the few organizations that make elected officials seem truthful by comparison
