Record Breaker

A Boston University student was fined $675,000 for illegally downloading and distributing 30 songs.

IP law is tricky. I recognize the havoc downloading has wreaked in the recording industry, and I suppose something has to be done about it. But does making examples of the few people they prosecute the right thing? This award seems excessive, yet will probably not stem the tide. And if there are enough of these cases, there'll probably be pressure on lawmakers to lower the fines.

Not clear the music industry will ever recover from the foolishness of shutting down Napster and going after its own fans, stopped buying CDs awhile ago based on this.
