Sorry, Virginia

Just curious. Has anyone done research into the average age when a child figures out (spoiler alert) there is no Santa Claus? Seems to me a fairly significant milestone in psychological development.

Cassie is 8 and a friend told her who Santa really is. I was hoping to get this one more year, but it wasn't to be. I think this is a pretty common age to figure that out.

My son pretended to believe in Santa Claus an extra year (8 or 9) because he thought it would bum out his parents- this was probably related to the infamous Easter bunny incident where the bunny had failed to make his deliveries by 7 AM but recovered and got there by 8

My daughter noticed that Santa's handwriting was the same as Dad's at 8 years old. However, I have never denied the existence of Santa when asked directly - I just smile and stay silent, staring off to the North.

Merry Christmas all!

The sample may be a bit small, but I think we can conclude that 8 is the year.

My 9 year old pretends to believe for my sake, because we both enjoy the traditions of writing the letter, leaving out cookies, etc., so I couldn't say for sure when she gave up on the idea.

Depends on the peer group, too. My daughter was 6 when her best friend told her there is no Santa Claus. I didn't mind the kid doing so, as she wasn't being malicious, but rather just passing on information she learned from her devoutly Muslim, immigrant parents. I can understand why they wouldn't perpetuate the myth of a Christian saint delivering presents to their child. My response was to tell Veronica "of course Santa doesn't deliver presents to Roshina, because she doesn't believe in him. If you don't want to believe in him he won't bring you presents either. You'll still get presents from Mommy and me, just not from Santa." She gave it about 2 seconds' thought and shouted aloud "I DO BELIEVE IN SANTA, I DO BELIEVE!" That's the last time we've ever discussed it.
