By George

George Harrison would be turning 67 today. It's hard to believe he's been dead over 8 years.

He was always the junior partner in The Beatles, overshadowed by the two best songwriters around. But taken by itself, his contribution is pretty impressive. He was great in support, as a singer and guitarist, but also wrote a handful of songs that stand up to the Beatles' best.

In particular, there's this miracle of beauty:

Was "Old Brown Shoe" ever a hit- I only know it because they stuck it on the blue greatest hits album (which, along the red companion, it seemed every kid who missed the beatles in the 60s bought as a cram course in the 70s).

His Naughty "Crackerbox Palace" video before videos were videos was also quirkily enjoyable

"Old Brown Shoe" was never a hit. It was a B-side that didn't chart. I never understood why they put it on the Blue Album except maybe they figured Geroge Deserved a bit more in royalties.

"Crackberbox Palace" was a cool video but also one of his better post-Beatles songs.

Dianne Wiest's character in "I Am Sam" made the same point about that song showing that he was way more than just a junior Beatle.

I'm embarrassed to admit that movie made me cry like a girl.
