It Gets Funnier Every Year

The Grammys have been such a joke for so long that I can't believe they still get any attention. First, they give out so many awards a Grammy means practically nothing. The only reason I even check the Grammy list every year is to make sure I didn't win one.

Worse, they have a poor record of recognizing quality (and a recognizable quality for picking poor records). At least until it's too late. This year, Bruce Springsteen, AC/DC, Jeff Beck, Judas Priest, Levon Helm and Steve Martin each won a Grammy. Not for lifetime achievement, for something they released last year. But can anyone doubt it's really for work they did decades ago?

For all the bad choices the Oscars make, at least I'm interested in who the nominees will be. And thank goodness they haven't broken them up into different awards for different genres.

Despite your intentions, you have enticed me to read the list. Aaargh. It's far more ridiculous than I thought.

BEST HARD ROCK PERFORMANCE: "War Machine," AC/DC

BEST METAL PERFORMANCE: "Dissident Aggressor," Judas Priest

Not everyone distinguishes "hard rock" from "metal" (note their attempt to be cool by dropping the "heavy"), and those that do disagree about where the line is. But I wasn't aware that anyone would draw the line in such a way that AC/DC was on one side and Judas Priest was on the other side.

I feel bad for some graduate student a hundred years from now who listens to all the Grammy winning songs as an attempt to analyze the "greatest" pop music of our era....
