Here's an idiosyncratic list of the top ten movie performances of the past 25 years.
10. Denzel Washington in Training Day
9. R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket
8. Kevin Spacey in American Beauty
7. Helen Mirren in The Queen
6. Val Kilmer in Tombstone
5. Meryl Streep in The Devil Wears Prada
4. Steve Coogan in 24 Hour Party People
3. Sharon Stone in Casino
2. Heath Ledger in The Dark Knight
1. Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List
I like most of these performances (though I didn't realize anyone thought that highly of #3), but I don't think a single one would make my list.
Not that I've compiled such a list. But I know the two performances on it would have to be Samuel L. Jackson in Pulp Fiction and Naomi Watts in Mulholland Drive.

Completely ignores the work of John Goodman in "King Ralph"
I thought Casino was underrated when it came out, and I told people that the only real problem with it was Sharon Stone. Naturally, she's the one who picked up the film's only Oscar nomination.
