Walk Of Life
I read somewhere that the cutoff point for a sedentary lifestyle is 5000 steps a day. So for the past few weeks I've tried to count how many steps I take in a normal day (even without any special exercise). However, I always lose count some time around the middle of the afternoon.

Well, what number are you up to (approx.), when you lose count?
If I knew that, I could pick up the count again.
Buy a pedometer. They register a step based on your foot impacts. I suppose they might register sitting down as a step, but that wouldn't throw off the calculation too much unless you're a Congressman attending a State of the Union address.
