Missing Words

I've been enjoying the reruns of Freaks And Geeks on IFC.  Linda Cardellini is quite charming, and all the references to the Detroit I grew up in are fun.  But one thing is missing.

I watch the show with the CC on and have noticed something.  Often the captioning has words from a song of the era, but there's only some instrumental music (not the same tune, either) playing.  I assume the show paid for the rights to broadcast these song originally, and no one's willing to pay the royalties on reruns.  But no one told that to the captioners, who did their work years ago.

The show survives, but it's weird reading words that aren't happening.

Why the cc habit? Losing your hearing and trying to back yourself up?

And how does this happen, the changing of the songs? You'd think redoing sound tracks would be prohibitively expensive.

I can hear fine, but sometimes actors garble words, and sometimes traffic comes by and drowns out the dialogue.

Redoing soundtracks is a lot cheaper, apparently, than paying royalties.
