Is That A Fact?
Daniel Patrick Moynihan famously said "Everyone is entitled to his own opinion, but not his own facts."
I agree, but this doesn't get us far. While facts may be facts, there are plenty of opposing groups out there that either pick which facts they believe are significant, or, seem capable of manufacturing their own "facts."
Sentiments color perception. So it's not always about getting people to agree on the facts, after which they'll argue about interpretation. Once they have a certain interpretation, that allows them to agree with their group what the facts are.

Well if we are being all high concept* here, there is a different in degree between looking at and interpreting different facts on the one end and outright lies/fantasies at the other. There are close cases clearly along the line but there are differences.
* I love the phrase "high concept"- it uses two positive and intellectual-sounding words to mean ignorance, deliberate vagueness and complete stupidity.
Is this a random thoughts entry or did something in particular inspire it?
I wrote this months ago about something specific but didn't go with it. So I cut off the abstract part and here it is.
