Messin' Around With Jim
John Lennon once said rock stars tend to die in plane crashes. Jim Croce died 38 years ago, only 30 years old himself. He had a fair amount of hits, but his album cuts are worth it, too.
His first #1 hit, "Bad Bad Leroy Brown" seemed like a reworking of his previous single, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," but I like both songs.
(By the way, it's true, the south side of Chicago is the baddest part of town.)

That time was the great era of story songs. I sat down with a friend to list them and came up with over 20 (pop songs in cluding country srossovers that were hits). These two were among the best (as they beside being good tunes, they had relatively coherent plots unlike many of them. (why was there a power failure in Georgia?)
It would have made more sense if the lights went out when they electrocuted the guy, but they hanged him instead.
What got thrown off the Talahatchie Bridge?
There have been, I recall, TV movies that attempt to answer the questions about Georgia Power and little sister's aiming skills and in an entirely different affair, what went on on Sharktop Ridge (or was it Choctaw Ridge) which make the incomprehensibility of the songs seem preferable.
Do you recall the story song about the drowned dog? or the horse that froze to death? or (an easy one)the weird girl with the magic radio?
Of course you refer to "Shannon," "Wildfire" and "Angie." I guess quite a few of those story songs had names for titles. Speaking of which, ever hear "Timothy"?
I wonder if George Harrison once said rock stars tend to get shot . . .
