Newhart/Bad/Malcolm

Here's a fine video of Bryan Cranston reprising Hal from Malcolm In The Middle.

Fun in itself, and obviously a parody of Newhart's ending.  And also a reminder of how different Hal is from Heisenberg.  It's hard to believe, but before Breaking Bad premiered some questioned hiring an actor so identified with a sitcom.

Just in case this is pulled from YouTube, here it is at the AV Club.

It's all been pulled. I guess they're saving it for the Breaking Bad DVD.

I never watched Malcolm. However, I had seen Cranston as Ted Mosby's ridiculous boss at his architecture firm in How I Met Your Mother, and yet it took me a long time to realize they were the same actor. Cranston completely changes his persona; it's really amazing.

And coincidentally, Bob Odenkirk played Marshall's boss on HIMYM.

Before Malcolm, Cranston appeared in just about every TV show there was in the 80s and 90s. He was probably best known as the recurring character Tim Whatley in Seinfeld, the dentist who converts to Judaism so he can tell Jewish jokes. Vince Gilligan hired him for work he'd done on The X-Files. Perhaps you remember him as a character who knows he's going to die on Babylon 5.

Wow! Just found the B5 scene on YouTube. I remember it, especially the awkward "Are you a married man?" line.
