BD

A quick goodbye to Bill Daily.  He was best known for two roles--Major Roger Healey on I Dream Of Jeannie and Howard Borden on The Bob Newhart Show.

On I Dream Of Jeannie, he was a fellow astronaut of Larry Hagman's Tony Nelson.  Nelson finds a genie (played by Barbara Eden) in the pilot and for five seasons, he and Healey tried to hide this fact from the outside world.  The show was pretty dumb farce, but the actors were game, and Daily added a lot as the sidekick.

He was even better on The Bob Newhart Show where he had superior material.  For six seasons he played Bob's next door neighbor, a navigator who wasn't all there.  The wacky neighbor is a sitcom mainstay, but Daily was one of the best ever.

The Bob Newhart intro is a full 60 seconds long. Now that intros have become so short, it's just weird to watch the long ones.

The intro to H. R. Pufnstuf and the intro to Lidsville each clock in at 1:51. The shows were only 30 minutes, minus commercials.... and there was a closing theme too. I guess that saved them a lot of money? And years later, these intros remain great while the actual shows are unimpressive.

Times have changed. There used to be three networks and no remote control--people would sit in their chairs and not change the channel. Now, a lot of shows don't even have a theme song, just a music sting. And they also have action over the closing credits, which lead right into the next show so you don't turn away.
