Yes She Can

That's more like it. Hillary lost to the wine-and-cheese crowd in Vermont, but otherwise it was her night. She slapped Obama silly in Ohio and Rhode Island and took the Texas popular vote after being behind in the polls for most of last week.

A lot of it was demographics, of course, but Hillary's success on Super Tuesday 2.0 was also millions saying to the media "we're not finished yet."

I think they got a little tired of the Barack the Messiah movement (with its celebrity-laden but otherwise empty videos ).

I hope this shuts up all the people who insisted she leave the race just because it was hurting their feelings.

Obama still has the clear lead in pledged delegates, and will carry that into the convention, but at this point, it seems like things will be going on till the bitter end. Or at least Pennsylvania.

PS Early on everyone reported that 2% of the Texas vote was in, even though over a million votes had already been recorded. Texas may be big, but it's not that big.

Wait, so Vermont are the wine-and-cheese crowd but Rhode Island is what, suddenly the heartland? How about this for an alternate headline here in the extra-spin zone: "Clinton wins by far less than she was polling just two weeks ago: shows no signs of attracting any voters under 50 other than poor white women afeared for their babies."

Let's take it back to six months ago and then no matter what happens Obama looks great, and boy did Giuliani take a beating last night.

(And Rhode Island has a much bigger mix of people than the whiter than white leftists of Vermont who, when they try to get serious about politics, pass laws in favor of Bush and Cheney being arrested and replaced with Ben and Jerry.)

For all the shouting, he's still the favorite. It's going to take a lot of work for her to convince all the super delegates to see things her way.

The clear victor last night was John McCain

I had the same problem with the math last night- the only way it makes sense is that
1) the "% of votes" referred to the percentage of the total number of precincts reporting and
2) that Texas precincts have varying amounts of population and
3) the higher population precincts (urban areas?) reported first.

Since the early returns (when the media were reporting 1-2%) had Obama up by 50,000-1000,000 votes, I would assume these were urban areas with large African American populations (which he carried by 80 or 90%)

I'm focusing on two weeks ago solely because that's when the accepted wisdom among most if not all of her party was that she needed "blowout" wins in both Texas and Ohio to continue the fight. Somehow she convinced people that gaining a whopping five or so delegates on the night, after ignoring the past 11 contests and falling way behind, qualifies. My guess is that, like LAGuy, people just enjoy a good fight.

Calling Vermont elites the "wine and cheese" crowd is an insult to wine and cheesers everywhere. More like the tofu and bean curd crowd, or maybe the Prius and carbon-offset crowd.

btw, for my vote, I wrote in Fred Thompson. Hey, a guy can always dream.

It's great to hear from you, Gaucho, and is that a new photo of an old Dan album?

Thank you. After taking an extended break, I've been back blogging for a couple of months now. I was thinking of giving it up but it's an election year and, as Alan King once said, "After making fun of seven Presidents, why should I stop now?"

Yes, I decided to back to basics with my avatar. After all, I am that Gaucho amigo.

Oh, and I realize you're not looking for anyone, but if you ever decide to add a Vermont Guy to your roster, I'm your man.

Hey, it'd be fine with me if you posted here, but why would you lower yourself to our level when you've already got your own great website (which I suggest everyone check out right now)?

Actually, it'd probably be up to New England Guy, since you're sort of horning in on his territory.

If it's "lowering" myself to post on a site that gets about a zillion more hits than mine does, so be it.

And the last thing I'd want to do is horn in on New England Guy.

New England is more than big enough for more guys. (I only have that name because its easier to say than "Massachusetts and Maine Guy" or "Northern End of I-95 Guy") The more the merrier.

Well, as we like to say in Vermont, you're always welcome to take New Hampshire.

Please.

So, if none of the other "guys" have objections, when would you like me to start?

You can start whenever you like, but remember, we need readers as much as writers, so feel free to keep on commenting.
