It was just about over before Tuesday, so what is it now?
Anyway, I remember how I felt four years ago--it didn't seem either candidate offered much. Except I consider both McCain and Obama far worse than either Bush or Kerry. It's so odd that Obama (and to a much lesser extent, McCain) gives rise to optimism. Sure, since his campaign is based on empty cliches ("Change we can believe in," anyone?) and little of substance, it's possible he'll be a big surprise. Trouble is, it's doubtful the surprise will be positive.
There is one hope I cling to--that the country runs itself, and a President can only do so much. (Though he sure can do a lot more with a pliant Congress. It's sad when you're rooting for gridlock, but it won't be the first time.)

I feel precisely the opposite. I'd take McCain or Obama over either Bush or Kerry in a heartbeat.
Out of pure curiosity I've been asking anyone claiming Obama's campaign is "based on empty cliches" (or the like) whether they've gone to his website to see if there are substantive policy proposals there. Have you?
I think the hear of both Obama's and McCain's appeal is that they are not Bush (or Kerry or Clinton) and there looks to be thorough house-cleaning coming either way. Though damaged by the campaigns, and the gotchas and the Miss Vicki and Rev Wright stories, they both provide untapped potential at this point and are still many things to many people.
Of course we know from sports which is frustratingly more like real life than I'd like it to be there is nothing worse than to have potential. Obama's first year in office would hopefully learn from the performance of Governor Deval Patrick's in Mass since January 2007- lots of missteps and slackening approval rating.
Speaking of sports analogies....
Oh, and so long as I'm election-linking, this was funny too.
Everyone's got their vague positions, and even their fairly meaningless specific proposals. Gary "Where's The Beef?" Hart had written extensive papers on what he planned to do. I'm talking about something that actually has meaning and goes beyond vague posturing and stances you hear from any politician (with some variations based on party). But listen to any Obama speech and you don't really get much.
I move for that last answer to be stricken as non-responsive. :-)
