It has been hard to remember lately that the country is in the midst of one of the most consequential presidential elections of our lifetimes.

Why do people talk this way? Every election counts, but is this one extra special?

It's hard to know how important any moment is till afterwards, but I'd guess the consequentiality of this election is somewhere in the middle.
