Why are the two possibilities treated as contradictory?

About 10-11 or so years ago after dressing in the dark (I had a colicky infant and spouse who could not be awakened upon pain of my death) with something hideous on- all of the colors of the rainbow but out of order- our sweet and impeccably-dressed young press secretary would always come in and comment on my "bold fashion statement".
Of course being male and sleep-deprived, I thought this was a compliment...
