On Wisconsin

Sharp-eyed observers of this blog may have noticed a curious omission the last few weeks: no Michigan football.

Truth is, like so many others, I'd written off this year. It was time for rebuilding. Then came Wisconsin.

What a Jekyll and Hyde game. The first half was the sorriest I'd ever seen the Wolverines play. They had five turnovers and 20 (not a misprint) yards of offense. Down only 19-0--not bad, considering--everyone watching figured the game was over. The only question was would Michigan get another first down.

Something must have happened during halftime, because a new team came out. Suddenly they had an offense, scoring a touchdown in the third quarter and three more in the fourth. Without warning, they were leading by 8 in a game that had been lost. Then, when it looked safe, the defense, which had been holding Wisconsin down, got sloppy and let the Badgers move almost at will. They almost scored before a turnover near the end zone seemed to ice it. But Michigan went three and out, and with less then 90 seconds left and seventy yards to go, Wisconsin turned it on and scored a touchdown. They had to go for two. It looked like they made it but it was called back for an ineligible receiver. They tried again, failed, and screwed up the onsides kick, saving the victory.

Michigan, deservedly unranked, beat the #9 team in the nation. Gives you hope that we may have a winning record this season.
