Wall Of Separation
John McCain was scheduled to be on David Letterman's show, but, as we all know, backed out. Earlier this week Letterman featured Bill Clinton, and a little while ago, Barack Obama. Other shows, like Jay Leno's and The View, regularly feature politicians as well.
Many people support the trend of political figures appearing in spots usually reserved for entertainers because it humanizes candidates and allows them to reach a wider audience.
I don't. There's rarely (I'd say never but I haven't watched them all) a deep conversation--the politicians usually stick to basic talking points. Worse, it leads to dead spots in shows I enjoy. Imagine if a Senator popped up on a sitcom to start talking about his 5-point plan to fix Wall Street.
No one has any trouble finding out about what politicians believe if they really want to know. And if they don't, why force-feed them a few slogans? Let's keep the politicians serious, and more important, let's keep the entertainment shows entertaining.

Actually Dave's snit was the most entertaining thing on his show for a while. McCain's no-show gave him more stuff than the painful forced interview would have.
