Scary
Over at the Teahouse I'm going to be Halloween blogging all month, so anyone who wants to stop by and join the fun, feel free.
Oh, and speaking of scary, I saw this about the bailout: (h/t Ed Driscoll)
You know where that very important $700-billion figure came from?
Here's a quote from that Forbes story:
"It's not based on any particular data point," a Treasury spokeswoman told Forbes.com Tuesday. "We just wanted to choose a really large number."
They made it up to be sufficiently ginormous to frighten everyone into rapid action.
And it worked.
Hmmm, make up something to frighten people into rapid action? Doesn't that sound familiar?
Oh, yeah.

Oh, yeah indeed.
I thought you meant the Patriot Act.
Thanks for the link, QueensGuy. I was so excited when I saw that VermontGuy had recognized the similarity of scaring us into rapid and drastic action when the Bush Administration took us into Iraq. I thought: "VermontGuy is seeing two sides of a situation! Hooray!" Then I hit the link -- Global Warming. Yawn.
The people who oppose the war in Iraq are doing the opposite. Now that the threat is gone, they pretend there never was any.
I question both premises of your statement, anon. 3:03, ie: (1) that there was a threat in Iraq; and (2) that folks won't pretend there wasn't a threat here (and that's why they took a principled stand and voted no, etc.)
That's the whole point. The people who oppose the Iraq War claim Iraq was never a threat. Lucky for them, their lack of judgment is protected by George Bush, who took care of the threat so they could say anything they want about Iraq with fear of the truth coming out.
Could you be more specific about the nature of the threat that George Bush took care of? I've honestly never heard it articulated in a concrete manner.
I hardly would think it's necessary to repeat that its former leader (not to mention his sons) was a violent, dangerous, loose cannon who regularly attacked others (including the U.S.), was increasingly unstable, sought as much power as possible, was a sponsor of terrorism, had the intention and capacity (this is known with certainty) to make weapons of mass destruction in a handful of weeks and also was actively seeking nuclear material. Now that he's dead and gone, we can all laugh and say we were nuts to think he was a serious threat.
"[Saddam]had the intention and capacity (this is known with certainty) to make weapons of mass destruction in a handful of weeks..."
Oh, ok.
