Tony Time

It's hard to say too much about the Tony Awards--especially since I haven't seen any of the shows nominated. Still, it seems a pretty uninspired year. There's the same bias toward big names, though, to be fair, part of that is it's hard to get shows off the ground these days without big names.

The production with the most nominations is Billy Elliot, which I have little interest in seeing. It looks like a lock for Best Musical (not unusual since many seasons only offer one solid new work). Best Play seems a bit more open.

These days there's often more action in the revival categories. Best Revival Of A Musical will probably go to West Side Story, and once again, the Play category is a tougher call.

Of all the names out there, the most intriguing is in Leading Actor In A Musical--Constantine Maroulis. We've already had an American Idol loser take an Oscar, why not a Tony?
