Forever Your Girl
What sort of train wreck is Paula Abdul's life that she can't sign up for another year of American Idol? There ain't a sweeter gig on TV. I'm guessing the producers were lowballing her, but most people wish they were getting lowballed like that.
Last year was the first season I didn't watch avidly. I thought it was getting a bit tired and I didn't like the four-judge panel. But without Paula, I'm not sure I'll watch at all. The only indispensable parts are Simon and the format, but Randy, Paula and Ryan still add something to the mix.
By the way, here's what I wrote last year:
...they seem ready to go forward with a fourth judge. Very bad idea. I don't know how good the judge will be herself, but three is just right. Plus each of the judges they've got now have different styles that complement each other. They are the nucleus of the show (Paula is the proton, Randy the neutron and Simon the nasty electron) and messing with that can be explosive. (Though it may be the producers are preparing to dump Paula for her erratic behavior, and need a replacement.)

No one running the show seemed to anticipate that a fourth judge -- at least a fourth judge who is, like DioGuardi, a complete windbag -- would eat into performance time for the contestants. The shows were so rushed. And there were fewer performances. (Remember when the final three or four would perform three songs in one night?) I think the fourth judge idea is like the celebrity mentor concept -- it ultimately means less time for the contestants and makes it hard to care about any of them.
And as addled as Abdul can be sometimes, she's still more charming than DioGuardi.
But whoever thought Kelly Ripa could surpass Kathy Lee Gifford? I
Love her or hate here, Adbul offered certain a fuzzy other-worldness to the show. She also served as the den mother. The new judge is often more just a female Randy.
The show's still a big enough hit for it to go on, but this can't be a good thing.
