Group Therapy

The Group (1966) is based on a Mary McCarthy novel I haven't read. Watching the film, though, it seems that the two Sidneys--writer-producer Buchman and director Lumet--try to toss every incident from the book into the film, willy-nilly. It features a bunch of hopeful starlets, but they move through everything so quickly it's hard to register what it all means.

In fact, Pauline Kael's lengthy (and nasty) piece on the making of The Group is far more enjoyable than the film.
