Sorry Mr. Phelps

Recently deceased Peter Graves had a long and storied acting career including the Mission ImpossibleTV series and Stalag 17 and to folks over 40, he was an instantly recognizable face.

While I'll leave any further summary to LAGuy if he chooses because he does this much better, I was taken aback by this obit in the Boston Globe. While he was great in the Airplane movies, for somebody with his large amount of work, I thought it was odd to headline the piece with a picture from the scene in Airplane where he portrays a silly pedophile (with great skill and to great amusement I would add, but still).

He's best known for his work on Mission: Impossible, but I would call his cockpit scene in Airplane! the greatest moment of his career. Of course, a lot of that played off his decades of being taken seriously.

I seem to recall his later work on cable documentary shows was well mocked by Phil Hartman.

So his tombstone should read "Tops in child molester yucks."

Irony has fared well this decade despite all the pontificators' prognostications
