I Want Answers

Speaking of Alice In Wonderland, the movie has Johnny Depp asking the Mad Hatter's famous riddle: "Why is a raven like a writing desk?" He doesn't have an answer. Neither does the book, but there have been so many given since, you figure the movie (which is Alice's return trip, after all) might have offered one.

Years after he published the book, Carroll himself proposed "Because it can produce a few notes, though… they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!" ("Nevar" is "raven" backward.)

Almost as famously, Sam Lloyd, the greatest puzzle expert of all, came up with several solutions. My favorites:

Because the notes for which they are noted are not noted for being musical notes

Because they both ought to be made to shut up.
