Death Comes To Todd

For years the two papers that cover the entertainment world, Variety and Hollywood Reporter have been in economic trouble. Not too long ago, Variety hid its online content behind a paywall. I guess that wasn't enough, so it's continued in the tradition of so many others and fired its top critics, Todd McCarthy (film) and David Rooney (theatre). Apparently they can continue to file as freelancers. (Why not just lower their salary?)

Reviews have always been the essence of Variety. Show biz historians check its files to see the reaction to obscure vaudeville acts. The paper covered everything, when and where it happened. Variety was also notorious for reviews that discuss commercial potential as much as aesthetic merit.

For years, McCarthy managed to discuss films in a manner that satisfied both the business and artistic end. He was also the best known byline. I always figured they'd keep him, even after everyone else was let go.

I met him a couple times. In particular, I recall seeing the original version of The Big Sleep at UCLA, being shown to the public for the first time in decades. He'd just published an excellent biography of Hawks and we got to talk a little about how the films with Bogey and Bacall were a turning point.

I hope he keeps working for Variety in some capacity, but it's clear the place isn't gonna be the same.
