Home, James

I didn't really care about where LeBron James ended up playing, but a lot of people sure did. The ESPN show where he announced his decision scored huge ratings. So I guess building up the decision was a good idea.

Or was it? I got an email yesterday from a friend who cares even less about James than I do. But he said he couldn't imagine worse PR. Here's this incredibly successful young sports god, and he's telling us which multimillion dollar deal he'll condescend to take. The worst part is that unless he stayed in Cleveland, any choice would make him look like an ingrate who's letting down a whole city.

He needed a whole show to devastate his town? Better he do it quickly and quietly, not make a circus of it.

make no mistake that he engineered the deals to make wade stay and miami to sign bosch be4 the King committed, but a huge reason as to why LBJ chose South Beach is due to the tax breaks he will get by being a Florida resident.

Why would he care about money? Anywhere he went he'd make more than enough so he wouldn't have to think about it. (And for tax purposes did he have to reside where he played?)

It makes more sense that he wanted to win some championships.

let me say that LeBron seems like just another self-obsessed athlete (who looked less than a star in the certain playoff games against Boston), any decision which screws over Cleveland can't be all bad.

I'm making a bet with a friend on how long it will be until we both go an entire day without hearing or reading the name LeBron. Over/under is 5 days from now. I chose over.

Many states and localities, probably most by now, have tax laws that nail them at the site of games, so there's a fairly complex calculation going on.

Not that basic income tax calculation isn't still an important factor.

And I know (distantly) some of the folks involved in his empire, and they're definitely smart planners, so this issue surely was worked very hard. I get the sense that, like Jordan before him, he is not a fool with his money. Would it have been all that hard to orchestrate his little team in New York?
