Here We Go

I wasn't able to see Saturday's season opener for Michigan, but from what 've heard, it sounds mostly positive.

It was a solid if not overwhelming victory against Connecticut, 30-10.  We'll be seeing tougher teams, and soon, so it's hard to draw too much from it.  But hey, as the last two years have taught us, any game Coach Rod wins is a good thing.

Looks like we've got a new QB, Denard Robinson.  That's been a hole we need filled.  He passed pretty well and ran spectacularly, which is what Rodriguez is looking for.  If he can keep it up, we're halfway home.  Apparently the offensive line is holding up, which is important, since Robinson's going to take hits, and the less the better.

I don't like how Michigan had trouble putting it away, but then, even good Michigan teams are like that.  We also had three fumbles, even if we picked them all up.  I'm sure the Coach will be doing drills to prevent that (and his style of offense sure has a lot of potential for fumbles).

What's been are biggest problem for the last two years is defense.  I'll take a good defense over a good offense, but Michigan has been embarrassinlgy porous for a while now.  Holding a team to 10 points, all scored in one quarter, isn't bad, but mining the stats, there is a problem.  Passing defense.

Michigan passed for 186 yards.  Acceptable, especially with so much running.  But the losing team got 205 yards.   So our line seems okay, but our secondary--very untested--is gonna give up a lot of points.  Next week we'll face a real passing QB in Notre Dame, and we'll see what we've got.

PS  The Big House is bigger than ever.  Michigan has always had the biggest crowds in football, but with additions to the stadium, the Connecticut game broke the record.

If he can improve this year, he's got one more year--can't possible blame anyone else after that.
