Art

Arthur Sullivan will forever be known as the second half of Gilbert and....

He probably wouldn't be happy about that, but hey, most composers are completely forgotten a century after they flourished.  So happy birthday, Sir Arthur.

PS  I don't know if G&S needed it, but this tune has been repopularized by Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Who usually gets first billing in musical collaborations, the lyricist or the composer?

Wow, that was fast. This post was delayed but you responded almost immediately.

Anyway, it can go either way. Gilbert was a well known playwright and got first billing. Richard Rodgers, on the other hand, got first billing before Hart or Hammerstein.

Kander (tunes) before Ebb (lyrics). Bock (tunes) before Harnick (lyrics). Adams (lyrics) before Strouse (tunes). Lerner (lyrics) before Loewe (tunes).

Maybe they should just flip a coin.

And to the philistines, there is but a single composer and playwright, Gilbert N. Sullivan.

Alone again, naturally.
