Magical Realism

I see my pals Nick Gillespie and Matt Welch have an editorial in today's LA Times. (Which one paces and which one sits at the keyboard?) It's about how the uncanny X-Men, in their diversity and sense of reinvention, represent us.

Okay, I can buy that, but what about this opener?

X-Men: First Class," which hit the screens this weekend, isn't just the latest installment in one of the most successful superhero movie franchises of the 21st century (the first four movies in the series grossed more than $1.5 billion). It's a more direct commentary on contemporary America than such ostensibly realist films as "Bridesmaids" and "Midnight in Paris."

Have they even seen Midnight In Paris?  It's about time travel.  Fast Five is ostensibly more realist.
