Step Up To The Plate
The Food Pyramid is dead. Long live the food Plate.
The Pyramid, when introduced almost 20 years ago, was supposed to be a big advance. Now, nutritionists claim it's confusing, suggests too many servings (especially since the people's idea of a serving is different from the government's), and supports too many grains, not to mention meats and dairy.
Meanwhile, the Plate is pretty direct. Fruits and vegetables play a large role, while grains and proteins (whatever they are--a problem for the future?) are put in their place, and dairy, which I suppose we don't even need that much, is off to the side. Note also there's a fork but no knife (for cutting meat?) and no spoon (for eating ice cream?).
Will it make a positive difference in the American diet. Call me back in 20 years.

Enquiring minds...
Is beer a grain? (maybe wine is a fruit. Or gin- vodka might be a veggie)
Are French Fries vegetables?
Protein sounds like soylent green
You are lucky it wasn't a spork.
Do people under 30 eat off plates any more?
They eat off plates more than they eat off pyramids.
It's shaped like soylent green but it's soylent purple.
So where's the napkin?
Judging solely by the colors, the graphic designers like pomegranates and really rare steak.
