Arch Humor

Happy birthday, Arch Oboler.  Never heard of him?  He was a writer probably best known for his work on the radio horror show Lights Out.  He used radio as few other did.  I first heard of his show Lights Out in Bill Cosby's routine on his album Wonderfulness. But I always figured "Chicken Heart" came wholly from Cosby's imagination. Little did I know it's based on an actual broadcast.

I had an Arch Oboler cassette tape as a kid that included the Chicken Heart story, as well as the story about the Mist that turns people inside out, which they parodied on a Simpsons Treehouse of Horror in the early years. I've always like mystery/horror radio shows - I have a large collection of CBS Radio Mystery Theaters, hosted by E.G Marshall (clearly patterned on Arch Oboler).

Did Arch do a story about drugging women and having sex with them?
