For The Best
Last month, the Academy Awards announced a new category: "outstanding achievement in popular film." I was not impressed. It seemed to go against the very concept of the Oscars, which was to reward the best films, not the films that sold the most tickets.
Not that the two are mutually exclusive. In fact, Oscars often go to big money-makers, while flops rarely get any. But the idea that they would seek out blockbusters seemed to be a desperate grab for rating.
So I'm glad to hear, after the (popular) outcry, the Academy won't give out this award. At least not next year. They'll still be discussing it. I wish they wouldn't.
PS Speaking of awards, here's a great headline over at Deadline Hollywood: "Emmys Hit New Diversity Milestone As Black Actors Sweep All Guest Categories."

Ah, you still have your eye.
I recently saw Crazy Rich Asians praised for its "diversity".
If you want to say an all-Asian movie increase the overall diversity of 2018's movies, that's fine. But when you say an all-Asian movie has great diversity, then I don't think that word means what you think it means.
