Irony
From the 2008 Democratic National Platform:
We believe that standing up for our country means standing up against sexism and all intolerance. Demeaning portrayals of women cheapen our debates, dampen the dreams of our daughters, and deny us the contributions of too many. Responsibility lies with us all.
Unless you're the Governor of Alaska, accepting the nomination for Republican Vice-President, in which case it's demean away.
Sexism, from the Left. Who'da thunk it?

Neither the Left nor the Right are some monolith to which you can fairly attribute this kind of criticism. As Noonan's piece that you linked to above points out, Obama's reaction was appropriate and classy. But he no more controls the DailyKos than John McCain controls Rush and O'Reilly.
I'm more than happy to give props to Obama for his response to the attacks on Sarah Palin's family. At the same time, I think it's fair to point out that any other response on his part would be political suicide.
It also gets back to your comment on another thread about "opponents vs. enemies". These are the kind of tactics people employ against enemies, not opponents.
All's fair in love and war.
