The Real Enemy

No matter how many time I see this, it still gets me. This is from a rebuttal to Sean Wilentz's essay in Newsweek on Obama. (One liberal rebutting another.)

As a respected Princeton historian and a committed Democrat, Wilentz should know better than anyone that now is the time when all Democrats must come together to defeat our real enemy: a Republican candidate who is pro-war, anti-choice, and so out of touch with the common man, he doesn't even know how many houses he owns.

So the Republicans are the real enemy. Not, oh, let's say, all those people we're fighting overseas who'd like nothing more than to blow us up.

(I also like how the house thing is one of the big three items in the anti-McCain indictment.)

On the Daily Show Tuesday night, they played about six Republicans saying that the right thing to do about Gustav was to "take off our Republican hats and put on our American hats." I was thinking how unfortunate that phrasing was -- being American isn't a hat one wears sometimes. This is worse. They're opponents, not enemies.

I couldn't agree more.
