We Still Love Them

Happy birthday, Shirley Owens, lead singer of The Shirelles.

A lot of oldies acts only have a hit or two, but look at the Shirelles: "Dedicated To The One I Love," "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow," "Mama Said," "Baby It's You," "Solider Boy" and many others. If you don't own their greatest hits, go out and buy it. Or download it.

They had great writers behind them, of course.

I once wrote a record review for my high school paper claiming that Blondie's "Eat To The Beat" was reminiscent of the Shirelles. It was an idle side comment but the editor liked it and made it the headline.

Luckily my ignorance was not exposed as the Shirelles fans (a few teachers) and the Blondie fans (a small subset on non-headbanger students) didn't share each other's tastes and my review didn't inspire anyone to investigate.

I could have mentioned a story about when I bought the Shirelles greatest hits. It was a cheaply produced vinyl album. So cheap it stuck to the turntable. I literall couldn't pull it off. I finally forced two chopsticks underneath it and got it off, completely scratching one side. I'd eventually replace it--on CD.
