Who Owns 1939?
I just watched the TCM special on 1939, "Hollywood's great year." They noted the amazing year Bette Davis had, starring in Juarez, Dark Victory, The Private Lives Of Elizabeth And Essex and The Old Maid.
Thne there was John Ford, who directed Stagecoach, Young Mr. Lincoln and Drums Along The Mohawk.
But to me, the guy who owned 1939 was character actor Thomas Mitchell. In that single year, he did great work in Gone With The Wind, Stagecoach (won an Oscar for that one), Mr. Smith Goes To Washington, Only Angels Have Wings and The Hunchback Of Notre Dame. I can't think of anyone who's ever had a year like that.
