Long Odds
Secretariat, a Disney movie, opens tomorrow. I'm not sure where the drama will be. As a competitor, Secretariat rarely lost and pretty much outclassed every other horse.
I don't know that much about the inside story, and I'm aware that Secretariat didn't win every time, but still, how much drama can there be? He was a great horse, and he won the Triple Crown. How do you make that exciting when just about everyone already knows it.

It takes a particular skill to make a movie suspenseful when you know the real-life ending ahead of time. E.g. "Breach" did a wonderful job of it. And the book "Seabiscuit" didn't teach me anything about the races the horse won, but was a can't-put-down read.
If you’ve ever been around horses at all, you’d experience drama-- often when you least expect it!
I recall anxiously following Secretariat’s career in the newspaper as a young, horse crazy girl. Probably still have the clippings somewhere. Suspect story is as much about the inexperienced, 40-something homemaker taking on this challenge and succeeding in a man’s world, as it is the equine factor. Diane Lane is perfectly cast here for several reasons. Not much of a movie goer--usually wait for the DVD-- but may splurge on this one....ladies of all ages love a good horse story!
