All Too True

Lately I've been hearing the word "truism" misused.  It may be too late to turn the tide, but I'd hate to see the word change its meaning.

It's supposed to tell you something is so obviously true it's not even worth saying.  However, these days I seem to hear it being used to mean some basic truth--even a deep truth, something important.

If you hear friends misuses it, correct them.  I'm sure they'll be glad to hear the truth.

actually I have heard a third usage (which is bit of a derrivation of the first but different) to mean something banal that everyone thinks is true but isn't.

That's actually known as "anything said in The New York Times."
