In Toto

I haven't spent too much time in the last twenty years thinking about Toto's #1 hit "Africa", but I heard it recently and it got me thinking.

Here's the chorus:

It's gonna take a lot to drag me away from you
There's nothing that a hundred men or more could ever do
I bless the rains down in Africa
Gonna take some time to do the things we never had

I don't get it.  The first two lines are confusingly expressed, but I see what they're getting at.  But how do you do things you never had?
