Interesting. First one we heard here in Michigan was for Ron Paul too. He was the only one advertising here for a couple weeks. Romney showed up next (on TV). And this week most of the GOP candidates are running ads here. Haven't seen/heard any ads from the Dems yet, but of course Michigan is being punished.
Michigan is being punished for going "too early" by not having its Dem delegates counted. (The Repubs count only half.)
But the real punishment is the non-line crossing Dem candidates who have decided to avoid the state. (A foreshadowing of things to come?--go along with their plans or you're a non-person. In any case, it's a convenient excuse for them to avoid a battle, and probably ends up helping McCain, who can get all the independent voters on his side.) But Michigan got it right--it had a choice between an early vote where it might matter (and sorta does) or a later vote where it probably wouldn't matter at all. I'm only sorry more states didn't give the finger to the national party leaders.
I liked the idea of trying to tamp down the schedule and draw it the process for a couple months (although cramming them together does make for more exciting TV) but since their efforts clearly didn't work to limit the schedule, it seems a little arbitrary to just pick on Michigan and Florida now (strike that- its always a good idea to pick on Florida). Hillary's name is on the ballot in Michigan- potential no win situation in the short term- if she wins, she's a scab against no competition and if she loses to uncommitted, she looks even worse. (Of course if she wins the nomination, it might be helpful down the road in the general election).
